LEBANIEGO SAINT YEAR

Everything you need to know to make the most of it

We are in the full year lebaniego 2017, called “Event of Exceptional Public Interest”, which begun on April 23, the day in which the door of Forgiveness was open.

The last lebaniego jubilee year was celebrated in 2006, 11 years ago, so we were looking forward to receiving again this beautiful celebration that fills the whole area with a multitude of religious and cultural activities that put in value the importance of the region of Liébana and in particular the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, central point of all the celebrations.

WHAT IS THE LEBANIEGO JUBILAR YEAR AND WHY IS IT CELEBRATED?

The Jubilee period is celebrated for conserving in the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana the largest piece of the Cross of Christ, the Lignum Crucis, a privilege that we share with Jerusalem, Rome and Santiago de Compostela.

In these 4 sites is officially celebrated by order of a papal bull, since the Middle Ages. There are also 3 other places where much more recent jubilee years are celebrated, among them the one of Caravaca of the Cross in Murcia, where also coincides in this year 2017.

From 1512 the Lebaniego Jubilee year is celebrated every time that the day 16 of April, festival of Santo Toribio, falls in Sunday. This year, on that day of Resurrection Sunday, was moved to the next Sunday 23rd the  edition number 73 of the lebaniego jubilee year as stipulated.

That day wasopened the Door of Forgiveness of the monastery, which will remain open until the end of this jubilee lebaniego 2017 in april 2018.

PILGRIMAGE TO SANTO TORIBIO DE LIÉBANA

In the Middle Ages it was not conceived to travel to Santiago without going through the Monastery of Santo Toribio of Liébana.

From here there were several routes to continue towards Santiago de Compostela. Currently the Lebaniego Way comes from Muñorrodero, 12 km.far from San Vicente de la Barquera, where the North Way of Saint James passes, which is growing over the years due to its spectacular green landscape and the proximity of the sea on the route. From San Vicente de la Barquera you can do the 3 stages of the lebaniego road that passes through towns such as San Vicente de la Barquera, Herrerías, Lamasón, Peñarrubia, Cillórigo, Potes and Camaleño, where our rural hotel is located.

This route crosses the Picos de Europa and therefore the spectacular mountain landscapes throughout the route are the predominant note of the lebaniego road, which has its own credential and a document accrediting the pilgrimage.

During this Lebaniego Jubilee year 2017, many of the pilgrims who go to Santiago de Compostela will also link it with the Lebaniego Way to win both jubilees.

In the Jubilee Years, every day at 12 p.m. a mass is celebrated in the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana, where in the middle of the eighteenth century, once the reconquest was consolidated, the remains of Bishop Toribio de Astorga and the relics of the Lignum Crucis were brought.

In the church you can see the baroque chapel of the s. XVIII where the Lignum Crucis, the lying statue of Saint Toribio of Astorga and the door of the Forgiveness that opens after the blows of a hammer every year jubilar, of Romanesque style.

We wait for you during this Jubilee Year Lebaniego 2017 to come to enjoy the region, culture, nature, gastronomy and this great celebration that makes coming to our area during this period is even more special.

Many pilgrims come to Liébana but are even more travelers who come without the need to make the pilgrimage, simply to visit the region, Santo Toribio de Liébana and everything that this Year Lebaniego Jubilee 2017 represents.
